History

George Funeral Home was established in 1920 by the late D.M. George. After working for Holley Hardware and Undertaking Co., George wanted to start a business dedicated to handling funeral services. Originally located on Richland Ave., George Funeral Home was one of the first funeral homes in South Carolina (License # 4).

Devoted to his work and the families he served, Mr. George established the tradition of quality care, which has earned the faith of Aiken residents for over eighty years.

After purchasing a winter residence from the Snow estate in 1949, Mr. George moved the funeral home to its current Park Avenue location. Later that year, D.M. died, leaving the business to two of his children: Edward and Otto. Upon returning from being a POW, a third son, Albert, became manager of the funeral home. Working side-by-side, the George brothers continued the tradition established by their father.

In 1965, Joseph McClellan joined the family firm as an embalmer. When Albert died in 1976, Joe carried on as manager under the guidance of Edward and Otto. Following Edward's death in 1984, Joe assumed the George tradition and owned the business until his retirement in 1999.

In the early 1990's Joe purchased the Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home and Southlawn Cemetery on Whiskey Rd. on the South side of Aiken. This purchase positioned George to be able to better serve the New Ellenton and Jackson communities.

George Funeral Homes has been owned by Ray and Alicia Visotski since August of 1999. Ray has been a licensed funeral director since 1983. In April of 2004, the Visotski’s sold Southlawn Cemetery to concentrate on the funeral homes. In December of 2005, we closed our funeral home on Whiskey Rd. and began construction of a new facility in Western Aiken County. We also added the words "Cremation Center" to our name to reflect the fact that we are the cremation specialists in Aiken County. The Visotski's are only the third owners of this historic business. Their commitment to the Aiken community is evidenced by the massive restoration of the buildings, community involvement and the dedication to the unparalleled service provided by the staff.

In Aiken, the George name is synonymous with quality funeral service.
