Frank I. Manter

Mr. Frank I. Manter, Jr., 94, of Aiken, died Sunday September 1, 2013 at Anchor Health & Rehab, Aiken. A memorial service, with military honors will take place on Friday, September 6, 2013 at 11am at Aiken's First Baptist Church. Interment will be private and the family will receive friends on Friday morning in the church parlor from 10am until the time of the service. GEORGE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTER is assisting the family.

A son of the late Frank I. Manter, Sr and Susan Kenyon Manter, he was born in Pawtucket RI and had lived in New England before moving to Aiken in 1954.

Frank graduated from Brown University in 1941 and then joined The US Navy, was trained at Annapolis, MD and then, as a Lieutenant, commanded a PT boat during World War II and was honored by the Library of Congress for his service. He had worked as a superintendant at the former Clearwater Finishing Mill and then worked and retired as a superintendant at the Santee Print Works, Sumter, SC. He was a long time member of Aiken's First Baptist Church.

After retiring, Frank became certified as a tutor with the Literacy Action of Aiken County and volunteered for eighteen years as a tutor for Aiken County students. He was also a tutor and trainer at Laubach Literacy Workshops, teaching immigrants and foreign students, working towards their citizenship. He was also a well-known area artist.

In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by two sons, Bruce W. Manter and Douglas K. Manter.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Frances Whitney Manter, Aiken, SC and two sons, Richard Manter, Aiken, SC and Stuart Manter, Columbia, SC; a sister, Ruth M. Lind, Attleboro, MA and two grandchildren, Megan E. Manter, Myrtle Beach, SC and Matthew S. Manter, Columbia, SC. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews living in New England.
