Col. William Price Gordon

A memorial service for Col. William Price Gordon, Jr., U.S.A.F., Ret., will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at 1 PM at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, Aiken, SC, with Reverend Leon Mozeliak and Reverend Mellie Hickey officiating. Interment will full military honors accorded by the United States Air Force Honor Guard will follow in the churchyard. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 8, 2003 from 6-8 PM at George Funeral Homes, Historic Downtown Chapel, 211 Park Ave., SW, Aiken, SC. Col. Gordon, 89, of Aiken, SC, husband of Mrs. Cynthia M. Gordon, died Sunday, afternoon, April 6, 2003 at his residence.

Born in Cadiz, KY, a son of the late Rev. William P. Gordon and the late Florence Darby Gordon, he was a decorated Air Force Fighter pilot in World War II and later was commander of the Air Sea Rescue Squadron. He was also a Planning and Operations officer who served in England and was awarded the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Service Cross, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, two battle stars and many clusters for his major decorations.

Later stationed at the Command Post at the Pentagon, he completed his military career as the commander of Aerospace Studies Institute at Maxwell Air Force Base, AL.

After retirement, Col. Gordon started a second career as Director of Development and later Professor of Economics at Limestone College. He retired from Limestone College and he and his late wife of forty-nine years, Barbara Ann Binnicker Gordon, moved to Aiken, SC, where he became a very active member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church.

In addition to his wife, Cynthia M. Gordon, daughters, Susan Gordon Bentley, and her husband, Stephen, Los Angeles, CA, Sally M. Gordon and her husband, Jim Kicidis, Charlotte, NC, Kitty Hartung and her husband, Tom, Clemmons, NC and Ann P. McCroy, and her husband, Pat, Charlotte, NC; and grandchildren, Katy Morrow and Will Bentley, brother-in-law, Charles M. Margaret Binnicker, Sewanee, TN, Katy Morrow and Will Bentley, and Cynthia?s children and grandchildren, Edward S. Flack, West Bloomfield, MI, Janette A. Ray, Aiken, SC, and Doreen C. Stowell, Pinkney, MI; C. Jason Ray and Joni C. Ray, survive Col. Gordon.

One of the last of the ?Greatest Generation?, Flash loved his family, golf, travel, volunteering, and spinning tales for his many friends.

The family has requested that memorials in memory of Col. Gordon be made to St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, 125 Pendleton St., SW, Aiken, SC 29801.
