Gene Paul Maddux

Gene Paul Maddux, age 83, passed away in his home on Monday March 21, 2022.

Paul was born in Nashville, TN, May 15, 1938. He was the son of Orville G. Maddux & Elizabeth Fleming Maddux. He attended Father Ryan High School in Nashville, TN and later completed a Bachelor’s Degree from Vanderbilt University in Mechanical Engineering. He served time in the United States Army and his professional career started with Allied Chemical in Hopewell, VA. From Virginia he moved along to jobs in Omaha, NE and Geismar, LA. Westinghouse brought him back to the state of Virginia in Richmond and he reconnected with Allied Chemical again in Morristown, NJ as a manager. An assignment with Allied General brought Paul to Barnwell, SC and when that project was closed, he went to work for Dupont based out at SRS in the late 80s. In 1989 he transitioned from DuPont to Westinghouse. His work at the site allowed him to meet many wonderful colleagues and friends. His responsibilities included travel to places like Las Alamos, Livermore, Albuquerque, and Rocky Flat. Paul was proud of his work and even more grateful for the many wonderful people he befriended along the way.

Paul enjoyed the game of golf. He enjoyed playing with his usual foursome at Houndslake Country Club for many years and after retirement he joined a large contingent of seniors at the Aiken Golf Club. In addition to golf, Paul enjoyed playing poker with his friends on a monthly basis. Paul’s biggest joy was watching his children and grandchildren play sports over the years. He was a fixture at every game he could attend and expected a rundown even in his last days when making it to the tournaments or the ballfield wasn’t as easy. Paul enjoyed watching sports on television as well. He was a big supporter of Vanderbilt, Notre Dame and the Clemson Tigers! Paul was so kind that he even found room in his heart to pull for the South Carolina Gamecocks from time to time.

Paul was an active member at St. Mary’s. It was a privilege for him to be involved with selecting the architect for the new church building and taking part in the construction management team. His family takes a particular pride in the new church as well knowing how much that project meant to Paul. Paul also devoted his time to St. Vincent DePaul, weekly perpetual adoration, serving as a eucharistic minister and the men’s group at church.

He is survived by his siblings Joe Maddux (and wife Miss Anne), Betty Holt, and Owen (Buddy) Maddux (and wife AJ) – all of Nashville, TN. Paul was the loving and devoted husband to his wife Mary Ann of Chicago, IL and father to his children: Lisa Baker (Aiken, SC), Deborah Latif (husband David - Fernandina Beach, FL), Sue Ellicott (husband Russ - Evans, GA), Sean Ryan (wife Colleen - Hilton Head Island, SC), Erin Runnels (husband George - Aiken, SC) and Tim Maddux (wife Lauren - Augusta, GA). “Papa” was loved by his seventeen grandchildren, great grandchildren, and their families: Amanda, Charlee Lane, Ryan (wife Stephanie), Rose, Ivy, Luke (fiancée Alina), Anna, Thomas, Quinn, McKenzie Rose, Maddie, Ellie, Cait, Sam, Owen, Emma Reese, and Charlie. Paul was also a loyal brother-in-law to Nick and Charlotte Kuehn (Aiken, SC) and caring uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Finally, he was a dear friend to countless others.

A Rosary will be at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2022, at Historic St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Park Ave.

The Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 25, 2022, at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fairfield St., with The Very Rev. Father Gregory Wilson as celebrant. Final prayers and commendation will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks friends and loved ones to consider a donation to St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church and/or her charities.
