Iris Winship

Iris Winship, age 90, passed away peacefully at her home in Aiken South Carolina on Christmas Eve 2022, surrounded by family and her faithful canine friend Wallace.

Iris was born in Langley Moor, County Durham, England to the late John Thomas Welsh and the late Florence Hancock. Iris had a passion for ballroom dancing and after meeting her Husband Jim, also a ballroom dancer, they went on to win local competitions. In 1952 they were runners up in the National Championships in London. They settled in a small village, Witton Gilbert, and continued with their passion for dancing, opening dancing schools at multiple locations in County Durham. After Jim’s passing, she joined her son Gavin in Aiken and made a new home in the Carolinas.

Iris was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jim and is now dancing with him in heaven. She is survived by her son Gavin and his wife Lisa, and sister Edith who lives in County Durham.
