John Leslie Stumpfig

January 7, 1931 — November 26, 2024

John Leslie Stumpfig, known to all as Jack, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the age of 93. After raising a family of four boys in Naperville, Illinois, and Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, Jack, along with his beloved wife, Dora, made Aiken, South Carolina their home in 2001.

Jack was born in Midland, Michigan, on January 7, 1931, to the late William and Irene Stumpfig. While attending elementary and high school, Jack excelled in golf and basketball. In 1949, he won the State High School Golf Championship and assisted the basketball team in their State Championship win that same year as high scorer.

He received his Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Economics from the University of Michigan where he met his loving wife, Dora Marie Hartwell, to whom he was married for 63 years until her passing in 2019. Jack was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and captain of the golf team while attending the university.

Jack’s 48 year career in the chemical industry began in college while working summers at the Dow Chemical Company. He attained the roles of Regional Sales and Corporate Account Manager in Chicago and New York while working at Dow, later becoming an independent contractor with the Kalama Chemical Company before retiring in 2001.

Throughout his work and retirement years, Jack continued his love of golf. At 53, he was the 1984 Men’s Club Champion at iconic Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, NJ and then went on to become Senior Club Champion there at aged 69. He was a member of Woodside County Club in Aiken for many years and has recorded seven Holes-in One over his lifetime.

Jack was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Aiken. Jack’s compassion for others was evident when proudly serving as a Stephens Minister. He is survived by his 4 sons: John, Thomas, David and Paul as well as 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild who all brought him great joy.
