Julian B. Salley, Jr.

Julian B. Salley, Jr., prominent Aiken attorney and civic leader, died on Friday, July 29, 2005, at his residence. He was 92.

Born in Aiken County, the son of Julian B. Salley and Eulalie Chafee Salley, he was a graduate of the former Aiken Institute, a 1933 graduate of The Citadel, and a 1936 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity and elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He returned to Aiken in 1936 and joined his father, P. F. Henderson, and Elmore S. Henderson in the law firm of Henderson & Salley where he remained for his entire career except for his military service. He served as the Aiken County attorney from 1951 to 1973. When the Henderson & Salley firm merged with the Hull Towill firm in Augusta to become Hull Towill Norman Barrett & Salley in 1999, Mr. Salley became of counsel to the firm. He was admitted to state and federal courts in South Carolina and the United States Supreme Court. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America.

Mr. Salley was a proud veteran of World War II where he served in the U. S. Army as a tank commander in the European theater. He retired from the Army Reserves with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Mr. Salley was a lifelong member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church. At the time of his death, he was a Life Trustee of the Hitchcock Foundation, a trustee of the Whitney Trust, and a Governor Emeritus of the Green Boundary Club. He was a former member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Aiken, a former member of the Aiken Businessmen?s Club, a former trustee of the Phelps Foundation, an honorary trustee of the Friends of Hopelands and Rye Patch, and a fifty year volunteer and former board member of the American Red Cross. He participated in and supported many other civic and charitable organizations throughout his life.

Mr. Salley is survived by his daughter, Sara Salley Wood, and her husband, Michael B. Wood, of Aiken, a niece, Salley R. Carr, of Frogmore, SC, and a great-nephew, Thomas Carr, of Frogmore. He was predeceased by his parents, his two wives, Helen Hoblit Salley, who died in 1989, and Jonatha Todd Salley, who died in 1999, a step-daughter, Julie Marshall Simons, and his sister, Eulalie S. Rutledge.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 2, 2005, at 11:00 AM at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church in Aiken with the The Reverend Leon Mozeliak, The Reverend Jerry Dubose, and The Reverend Marty Conner officiating. Interment will follow in Bethany Cemetery. Active casketbearers will be Dr. Harry E. Shealy, Jr., Michael K. Farmer, William H. Tucker, James M. Holly, R. E. Hanna, III, and Michael K. Hatch. Honorary casketbearers will be members of the law firm of Hull Towill Norman Barrett & Salley, members of the Rotary Club of Aiken, and members of the Aiken Businessmen?s Club.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm on Monday, August 1, 2005 at George Funeral Homes Historic Downtown Chapel, 211 Park Avenue, SW, Aiken. Memorials may be made to the Aiken Chapter of the American Red Cross, Post Office Box 384, Aiken, SC 29802, the Hitchcock Foundation, Post Office Box 1702, Aiken, SC 29802, or the University of South Carolina Educational Foundation-Aiken Partnership for inclusion in the Julian B. Salley, Jr. Endowment Fund for the maintenance of the Pickens-Salley house on the Aiken campus.
