Kris Lopaz Gimmy

Memorial services for Mr. Kris Lopaz Gimmy, 85, of Aiken, will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at the Chapel of St. Johns United Methodist Church, under the care of GEORGE FUNERAL HOME. Mr. Gimmy passed away on Friday, August 12, 2016 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, www.alzfdn.org.

Born in St. Louis, he was a son of the late, Loyal and Thelma Wedding Gimmy. Mr. Gimmy was a Research Engineer with DuPont Co. and spent his entire career working at the Savannah River Plant. He lead the effort at the site to install process control computers to monitor & control the nuclear reactors. He was recognized as an authority on the development & testing of software for such applications. He was invited to give seminars on process software validation techniques at MIT and the National Bureau of Standards.

Mr. & Mrs. Gimmy have resided in Aiken since 1953. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and was active in community affairs. He was a founding member and first conductor of the Aiken Community Band in 1959. The Band still performs in the Summer Concert Series at Hopeland Gardens. Mr. Gimmy also worked many years with the "Community Concerts Association" to bring major artist to perform classical music in Aiken.

He was also a founding member of the Georgia-South Carolina Chapter of the Antique Auto Club of America. He was known locally for his 1937 Cord Automobile, which participated in many area events and parades. The restoration of this classic car was a family project, and it received the prestigious national "Gordon Buehrig Award", as Best Cord Automobile, in 1978. He also restored and owned a 1941 Lincoln Continental.

Survivors include his loving wife Carolyn Gimmy of Aiken; a son, John Gimmy (Debra) of Chesapeake City, MD; a daughter, Kathryn Furr (Don) of Costa Mesa, CA and four grandchildren, Nicole, Dylan, Kayla and Kyle.
