Naomi Hamilton

Naomi Hamilton (January 7, 1930 – May 31, 2022)

We mourn the loss of Naomi (Nan) Hamilton, who passed away on May 31, 2022 at the age of 92 years. Nan was predeceased by her parents, Bertha and Charles Gordon, her husband Albert Hamilton and a sister, Ruth Herrington, sisters-in-law MaryeLou Pilgrim, Virginia McDaniel, and Judy Pruitt and brother-in-law Paul Hamilton. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Diane and John Verner of Albuquerque, NM, grandson Chris Verner of Houston and his wife, Liz, and sisters Miriam Nacmanie of Lake Katrine, NY and Hazel Gordon of Longmont, CO, her sister-in-law, Donna Barrett and nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. Nan, as a scientist, delved deeply into what the world offered her and enjoyed her artistic, musical, reading and horticultural hobbies throughout the decades. In her retirement, she took pride in her gardening accomplishments that were also enjoyed by her congenial neighbors. With a questioning and penetrating mind, she continued to pursue answers to fundamental questions about the nature of the world and our universe, human and otherwise, and worked hard to gain the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa scholastic achievement award in college under adverse circumstances. Age didn’t even deter her from becoming one of the best students in her class to graduate with an M.S. degree in a medical field during her late 50s.

Nan and Al travelled extensively over their lives. They also lived in many different locations before retiring to South Carolina.

Having a quiet sense of humor that was honed by her determination to overcome life’s obstacles, she told of her love of competing with younger students for high grades at that time. Her career as an organic chemist/microbiologist was much enjoyed, she remarked, because she could grow things, in that case, fungi and molds. Growth was an integral part of her being and she selflessly supported her families as much as possible to keep siblings, parents, husband and daughter comfortable throughout their lives. A rare, humble, extremely generous and gracious human being, Nan left a void in the lives of those she knew well that cannot be filled.

Funeral Services and Interment will be at 10 a.m. on Monday October 20 at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
