Norbert Joseph Denil made a peaceful transition December 31, 2014, from the effects of Alzheimer's.

Norb was a graduate of Central Catholic H.S., Green Bay, WI, receiving a scholarship to attend General Motors Institute, Flint, MI. There he completed his Masters in Mechanical Engineering while working for Cadillac Motor Car Division, Detroit. Norb went on to complete additional degrees in linguistics, machine languages, and computer design, including a PhD, ScD from MIT. He also served as a professor of engineering at Fordham University. Norb was an early innovator in the emerging field of computer science and was influential in the design and implementation of artificial intelligence for IBM.

Norb was preceded in passing by his parents, Joseph and Isabelle (VanDreel) Denil, a brother Ralph, and sister-in-law Sharon (Rathmann) Denil. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Catherine (Cat), son Mark, and his children Misha, Marika and Ada; daughters Elizabeth (Jack) Gavin and their son David, Sally Ann (Kurt) Denil-Fachisthers; sister Mary (Donne) Anderson, brothers John (Carol), David (Donna), and Peter.

Visitation at George Funeral Home, Aiken, S.C. from 1:00 - 3:00 on January 8, 2014 with a memorial service immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, a donation for Alzheimer's research would be appreciated.
