Professor John Bascomb Westbrook Sr.,Ph.D., a beloved husband, father, and esteemed educator, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 6th, 2025, at Aiken Regional Medical Center in Aiken, South Carolina. Born on February 17th, 1936, in Smyrna, Georgia, John lived an extraordinary life dedicated to pursuing knowledge and enriching his community.
John was the cherished husband of Julia Westbrook, and a devoted father to his son, John Bascomb Westbrook Jr., who resides in Aiken, SC. John is also survived by his beloved siblings: three sisters, Marion Westbrook Phillips, Elizabeth Westbrook, and Ruth Westbrook Skelton; and two brothers, Harold Westbrook and Henry Westbrook
.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Talmadge Pharr and Ellen Bramlett Westbrook
A revered Professor of Biology at the University of South Carolina at Aiken, John was instrumental in shaping the minds of countless nursing students, imparting a deep understanding of anatomy and physiology. His tenure began as a founding professor at the university's initial location at Banksia, marking the beginning of a legacy that would last a lifetime.
John's passion for learning extended beyond the walls of academia. As a youth, he was an active Boy Scout, instilling in him a lifelong love for adventure and the outdoors. This passion culminated in his earning a pilot's license, allowing him to soar to new heights. In addition to his teaching and personal pursuits, John was a dedicated member of the Union of Concerned Scientists, advocating for responsible science in the service of humanity.
His warmth, intelligence, and unwavering dedication will be missed by all who knew him.
