Thomas A. Scirghi, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on Friday, July 18, 2025. Born on December 25, 1925, in Brooklyn, New York, Thomas lived a life full of love, dedication, and service.
Residing in Aiken, South Carolina, Thomas was a cherished member of the community and a devout member of St Mary, Help of Christians.. Thomas was born and grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and attended Brooklyn Prep before receiving his BA in Business from Fordham University. He married Patricia, nee Alexander, in 1952, and together they raised four children, first in Brooklyn, before moving to Dix Hills, Long Island.
Thomas was a dedicated financial accountant for GMAC, and enjoyed working at the General Motors' Headquarters and Flagship Showroom on 5th Ave in NY, which he walked to from Penn Station, rain or shine. Tom and Pat were dedicated parishioners at St Matthew's Church in Dix Hills, where Pat served as parish secretary for decades. Thomas had a passion for cooking, gardening, reading, walking, traveling, especially to Ogunquit, Maine every summer with Pat. He ordered a large lobster for Pat every night. He loved building things at his Long Island home, but especially loved sharing a good story or several jokes to almost everyone he met.
Thomas retired to Aiken to be closer to his daughter Barbara, his son-in-law, and his five granddaughters, where he celebrated every holiday, birthday, and graduation with wonderful home-cooked Italian dinners. He attended every graduation for his five beloved granddaughters, from St. Mary's School through high school, college, and graduate school, traveling to New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington, DC and Clemson through the years. He had a mutual admiration society with his seven great-grandchildren, who called him "Nonno" and who all knew he was good for an ice cream treat on every visit.
Thomas is survived by his children: daughter Barbara (Stephen) Grant of Aiken; sons Rev. Thomas J. Scirghi, SJ of Fordham University, NY, and Edward J. Scirghi of Fort Lauderdale, FL. He is also survived by his sister, Dina LaFond of Livingston, NJ, his five grandchildren: Patricia (Joseph) Mets, Valerie (Parker) Bedsole, Jennifer Grant, Madeline Grant, and Elizabeth (Griffin) Donley; and seven great-grandchildren: Jack, Noah, Livia, Elijah, Grant, Levi, and Audrey, as well as countless cousins and nieces and nephews by marriage.
He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Patricia Alexander Scirghi; his parents, Joseph and Livia Scirghi; his son, John Scirghi; and sisters, Irma Contadini and Rose Scrighi.
